With the release of VMware Horizon 7.3 VMware is adding more features to the Microsoft Skype integration. The Microsoft Skype integration is designed to offload the hosted environment when making video calls to other Skype users. The local client will process the call and handle the video/audio streams while the end user still works in a centralized desktop.
Until now this was only available for virtual desktops (VDI) but with the 7.3 version this will also be available for an RDSH hosted solution. Here is a quick overview of the new features offered from VMware Horizon 7.3 with the Microsoft Skype integration.
- Multiparty conferencing
- E911
- Customized ringtones
- Forward Error Connection (ECC)
- Quality of Experience (QOE)
- RDSH support as mentioned before
- Call park and pickup
- USB Desk phone
Client side things are changing as well. Where previously only Windows clients were supported now also Linux is and Max is in a private beta.
The Linux version supported are;
- Ubuntu 12.04 (32-Bit)
- Ubuntu 14.04 (32-Bit / 64-Bit)
- Ubuntu 16.04 (64-Bit)
- RHEL 6.9 / CentosOS 6.x (64-Bit)
- SLED12 SP2 (64-Bit)
From a Windows point of view because of the RDSH support added some server operating systems are now a requirement. The following server operating systems are a requirement when you want to use the Skype integration with an RDSH environment;
- Microsoft Windows 2008 R2
- Microsoft Windows 2012 R2
That’s what is announced and will be available for Skype with Horizon 7.3. Stay tuned for more news.
